Multiple people without heat due to water main and gas line broken

By 10 p.m. the number of buildings impacted by this incident rose by several, now affecting dozens more.

GAITHERSBURG, Md. — A community in Gaithersburg is without water and heat Monday night. 

Crews were dispatched to an apartment complex on 14 S. Frederick Ave at 7:30 p.m., once they learned a contractor hit a gas line and broke a water main. Officials say residents in three buildings were evacuated while crews investigated the leak.

By 10 p.m. the number of buildings impacted by this incident rose by several, now affecting dozens more. Officials shut off water and gas to the buildings. Leaving residents without heat Monday night. 

The residents who weren't initially impacted by the water main/gas line break were allowed to shelter in place. However, they will likely be asked to evacuate soon.

Temperatures are expected to stay in the high 20s through at least noon on Tuesday. Even then, temperatures will only get up to 37 degrees. 

Officials have not given an exact number of people impacted or how long repairs will take.
