School board has voted to change JEB Stuart High School to Justice High School after more than four hours of discussion
The meeting lasted more than four hours now. Fitting, as this has been a debate that has dominated discussion in Fairfax County for two years.
Leading up to the start of Thursday's meeting, four names were being looked at to replace the current name JEB Stuart.
- Justice -- a name that would invoke memories of Thurgood Marshall and the concept of Justice.
- Barbara Rose Johns - a black civil rights activist.
- Colonel Louis G. Mendez -- a Hispanic World War II veteran with local ties.
- "Stuart" -- the current name with JEB left off.
But, the board simply was not able to come to any consensus on either of the four names that have been brought up in various motions that have been voted on.
Johns, Mendez and Stuart all failed in separate votes.
There was a lot of emotion on the board right now, much of it borne from how this entire process has been handled.
