FALLS CHURCH, Va. (WUSA9) -- The Fairfax County branch of the NAACP announced Sunday that they are partnering with student and alumni groups in support of a name change for JEB Stuart High School.
The student group, known as "Students for Change", proposed in May that the name of the high school be changed. An alumni group, known as "Alumni for Change", has also spoken out in support of a change.
"It is time for our public institutions, including our schools, to reflect the values and diversity of today's citizens and not those held over from the days of segregation," Branch President Shirley Ginwright said in a statement.
An online petition to change the name started by actress Julianne Moore and producer Bruce Cohen, both of whom attended the high school, has more than 32,000 signatures.
Stuart, a Virginia native, was a Confederate general during the Civil War.
