Fairfax County Police investigate crash that left 1 man dead in Lorton, Virginia

Police say the crash happened at the intersection of US-1 and Giles Run in Lorton, after a van and a dump truck collided.

LORTON, Va. — Fairfax County Police are investigating a crash that left one man dead Wednesday morning.

Just before 6:30 a.m., officers responded to the scene of a crash involving a dump truck and a van at the intersection of US-1 and Giles Run in Lorton. A man driving a van south on Richmond Highway rearended a roll back dump truck that was stopped in the southbound left lane of the highway while waiting to turn left on Giles Run Road. 

Police said the driver of the van, identifie as 19-year-old Jason Emeric Brunsman, died at a local hospital. 

The dump truck driver was uninjured and remained at the scene, according to police.

All lanes were blocked in both directions on US-1 Wednesday morning, causing miles of delays. 

Detectives do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, and are still working to determine if speed was a factor. The investigation into this crash is active and ongoing.

According to Fairfax County Police, there were three deadly crashes in the county at this point in 2023. So far, the county has seen six traffic fatalities in 2024.
