FAIRFAX, Va. — Fairfax Connector bus service will remain suspended through Monday as workers continue to strike.
Monday represents the 12th day of the strike that began at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Feb 22 when bus workers walked off the job, citing unfair labor practices. Those on strike are asking for better pay, more sick leave, and a retirement plan.
ATU Local 689 represents about 638 Fairfax Connector bus operators and mechanics on strike. The union says workers have been working under an expired contract since December of 2023. Contract negotiations between the union and Transdev have been underway since October.
“The Union and Transdev were not able to come to a resolution today. Further discussion on key economic issues is needed and the two sides are expected to meet again on this Tuesday, March 5th. Transdev has continued to repeat an outlandish and inflated dollar amount for the compensation package offered to workers without providing the Union with the complete financial data and calculations. Transdev must be relying on Voodoo math,” said ATU Local 689 spokesperson Ben Lynn on Sunday.
Both sides are expected to meet again on Tuesday, March 5 in order to reach a resolution.
Passengers affected may want to consider alternate ways to travel, such as carpooling, taking Metrobus, Metrorail, or Virginia Railway Express (VRE) service, biking, walking, and teleworking. There are more than 4,000 available parking spaces at park-and-ride facilities across Fairfax County with access to express lanes, VRE and ridesharing.
