Hybla Valley man arrested five times in 102 days

Police say when they arrested Galeas on Friday, he was in a stolen car with stolen license plates.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — A Fairfax County man is back behind bars – again.

It's the fifth time in 102 days, that Fairfax County Police say they've arrested Angel Argueta Galeas, 22, of Hybla Valley.

"It's just a failure of our criminal justice system," said Fairfax County Supervisor Pat Herrity, who represents the Springfield District.

Herrity told WUSA9 he was shocked when he found out Argueta Galeas had been released last week, after being arrested in connection to a 24-hour burglary spree. One of the victims was a 93-year-old woman.

He was even more shocked when he found out, that one day after he was released, police said they arrested him again, after reportedly finding him behind the wheel of stolen car, with stolen plates.

"My concern is our residents and our residents safety because who knows what he's gonna do if confronted," said Herrity.

Fairfax County Police told WUSA9 on Monday that Argueta Galeas was first arrested in September on multiple charges, including armed robbery.

"A community member was sitting on a bench and was approached by a suspect who pointed a firearm in his face and demanded all of his property," said Lt. James Curry with the Fairfax County Police Department.

Lt. Curry told WUSA9 that Galeas was arrested and charged.

Within a few days, court records show he was released. In November, he was arrested again on a different grand larceny charge and again released.

At the beginning of December, FCPD says they were called for a noise complaint about a loud party. When they arrived they say they recognized Argueta Galeas as someone who was "wanted" and tried to take him into custody.

"As they were trying to do that the suspect bit one of the officer in the arm," said Lt. Curry.

Argueta Galeas was arrested and charged with assault on a law enforcement officer.

He was released on Dec. 6.

On Tuesday, he was arrested again in connection to a string of burglaries that all occurred within a 24-hour timespan. On Thursday, FCPD says he was released.

In a statement to WUSA9, the Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney wrote:

“Our office opposed bond since we perceived the defendant to be a danger to the community, due to both the short turnaround time of these alleged offenses and because he allegedly came face to face with at least one victim. However, since in this case the judge did grant bond over our objection, we requested that he have no contact with any of the victims, be on pretrial supervision, and be seen for substance abuse treatment.”

FCPD said they were still continuing to investigate his connection to additional possible crimes when he was released.

"There's no doubt that it's frustrating for the officers to see that and I'm sure that it's frustrating for any community member who had their car stolen," said Lt. Curry.

Friday, detectives with the Fugitive Track and Apprehension Unit, said they found him in a stolen Hyundai Sonata with stolen license plates. He was taken into custody. Detectives said the vehicle was stolen from the West Springfield Police District earlier in the day.

Police say Argueta Galeas was charged with three counts of misdemeanor destruction of property, three counts of petit larceny, three counts of vehicle trespassing and one count of credit card theft. He was also charged with grand larceny – auto theft, destruction of property, petit larceny, and violating conditions of his release.

Police say this will not deter them from making arrests.

"If you think that you're going to continue to get away with these things you're not," said Lt. Curry.

As for Supervisor Herrity, he says something needs to change.

"Somebody charged with various accounts including armed robbery and you let them go?  That makes no sense to me," he said.
