WASHINGTON (AP) - Washington authorities have cited the owner of a Dupont Circle house where two tenants died in a June fire, saying inspectors found no license to rent rooms.
The Washington Post reports the notices were made public Thursday and name the building owner, Len Salas, and his father, Max Salas, who lived in the house and who one tenant said accepted the rent checks.
The Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs issued three fines against the men for a total of $6,000.
A fire on June 3 caused the deaths of 25-year-old Nina Brekelmans and 24-year-old Michael Patrick McLoughlin. Authorities say an electrical short started the blaze.
Families of both victims have filed $10 million wrongful-death lawsuits against the men.
Len Salas couldn't be reached for comment Thursday. Max Salas's attorney, Roderick Barnes, declined to comment.
