Driver in fatal multi-car crash had no license, police say

A serious crash involving nine vehicles on Largo Road has left one woman dead, Prince George's County Fire Department said.

LARGO, Md. (WUSA9) -- The driver Maryland State police say was at the center of a fatal crash involving nine vehicles Thursday morning was driving without a license and had an outstanding warrant for his arrest, police say.

Juan Sanchez of Laurel, Md. is currently being by police held on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court on a DUI case. Charges against Sanchez in connection to Thursday's accident are pending, police say.

At around 9:00 a.m., police say Sanchez, 34, was driving a blue Chevy Silverado heading southbound on Largo Road at Lottsford Road. At the same time, police say Angela Jefferson of Springdale, Md. was driving her burgundy GMC vehicle in an unknown direction on Lottsford Road.

For a still unknown reason, police say Jefferson and Sanchez collided and their vehicles subsequently crashed into seven other vehicles. 

Jefferson, 53, was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The drivers and passengers of the other vehicles were also transported to area hospitals.

Police say charges are pending against Sanchez in connection to the accident and a security detail has been assigned to him.
