Police say the North Dakota pillar was tagged with graffiti before 10 am Monday. It was later reported to the park system later that night.
Republican Rep. Kevin Cramer tweeted he believed the graffiti was related to the North Dakota pipeline protests. The NPS says it is not sure.
Clean up crews used light paint stripper to remove the vandalism Tuesday morning. An NPS spokesperson said the vandalized portion of the memorial may need to be cleaned again.
Park Police are investigating the incident.
NPS asks anyone with information to contact investigators at 202-610-7500.
