“I’m never rooting for someone to lose their job,” said long time season ticket holder Chuck Fanslau. “It’s the right decision, probably.”
Around the Fed Ex Field parking lot Sunday afternoon, many fans said the decision to fire Rivera is a foregone conclusion.
“Our record,” said season ticket holder Andy Hammond when asked why Rivera should be fired. “We have not had a winning season since he’s been here.”
“I’m looking forward to it, to be completely honest,” said Hassan Ennaciri, also a season ticket holder.
“I think the league has passed him by,” said lifelong fan Calvin Ferguson. “I think he has a real old school mentality in how he does everything. And so, I think it’s time to get some fresh new blood.”
“We’re losing our pow. We’re losing our pow!” said Kristi Harmon. “He is not in it for the players."
But Harmon hopes the organization and fans can show Rivera grace.
“I did not say fired,” Harmon said. “I think it’s more respectable to say he is being released.”
However Harmon says it, a new coach would mean new hope for fans desperate for the Commanders to win again.
“You always want your team to win,” said Brandi Fanslau. “And you always want that coach that can provide that win.”
Although little has changed this year with the Commanders on field results, things are better in the stands. Sunday’s game against the Cowboys was another sellout. In fact, the team sold out every home regular season game for the first time, in recent memory.
