WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- A volunteer dive team from New Jersey searched the Anacostia River Saturday in an effort to find Relisha Rudd.

Relisha was eight years old and staying with her family at the D.C. General Homeless Shelter before her disappearance last March.

The Garden State Underwater Recovery Unit began the search of the Anacostia River at Kenilworth Park.

WUSA9's Stephanie Ramirez reported that the dive team was asked by a family friend to search the area where dogs tracked a scent last October.

The dive team's leader said the search could take five minutes to three hours.

Relisha's suspected kidnapper was a janitor at the homeless shelter. He ended up killing himself, but Relisha has never been found.
