Heavy smoke seen 'for quite some distance' after empty warehouse goes up in flames

Firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire in the 2700 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue Saturday.

WASHINGTON — Smoke could be seen far across the District Saturday afternoon after a two-story, vacant warehouse in Southeast went up in flames.

Just before 4 p.m., DC Fire and EMS responded to a two-alarm fire in the 2700 block of Martin Luther King Junior Avenue. The crews released multiple photos as they battled the blaze using an "exterior attack."

"Smoke from the 2 Alarm fire on King Ave SE can be seen for quite some distance," the department tweeted.

After approximately 90 minutes of working to put out the fire, DC Fire and EMS said the fire was "under control" but said they expect the building to collapse due to the damage already done.

"Still wetting down hotspots," officials said. "Units will remain on scene for a considerable amount of time."

No injuries have been reported.

The fire has caused delays and detours for Metrobus customers in Southeast.

Metro officials apologize for the extra travel time and longer waits.
