WASHINGTON (WUSA9)-- Metro's customer service committee voted and approved proposed name changes for both the Smithsonian and Foggy Bottom-GW Metro stations Thursday morning.

Once voted on and approved by the full board, the stations will be called "Smithsonian-National Mall" and Foggy Bottom-GW-Kennedy Center" Metro stations.

Members of Metro's customer service committee say the name change would help tourist, that often rely on Metro, figure out which stops get them closer to Washington landmarks. Metro Chairman Jack Evans added that the station name changes would also strengthen ties with the community.

A survey, conducted by Metro, found that 56 percent of its customers supported 'National Mall' being added to the Smithsonian Metro station name. As for the addition of 'Kennedy Center' to the "Foggy Bottom-GW,' only 1 in 4 riders supported the change.

The National Park Service and the Kennedy Center are paying for the name change, according to a Metro spokesperson.
