Recall backlash: Thieves steal ‘Recall Charles Allen’ signs on Capitol Hill

Someone is stealing political signs out of Recall supporters’ yards. The homeowners captured some of them on camera.

WASHINGTON — There is a recall backlash starting on Capitol Hill. People in favor of recalling councilman Charles Allen said over the weekend people started stealing their "recall" signs.

On Capitol Hill neighbors display their causes prominently in their yards. Some are signs of climate concerns, humanitarian efforts, and the occasional local politics.

This month a new set of signs started popping up.

“Charles Allen’s policies the last couple years have been awful,” Cindi Von Cannon, a ‘Recall Charles Allen’ supporter said.

Neighbors fed up with crime in their area want the councilman recalled.

“We wanna signal our support for the recall,’ Zach Graves, a Capitol Hill man said of his sign.

Graves put his sign out immediately, but Sunday morning it was gone.

“I noticed my sign was stolen so I pulled my video feed,” he said.

On the video feed he saw a man in a blue hoodie comes through his fence, flicks off the camera and steals his sign.

“I talked to some of my neighbors found out their signs had also been stolen,” he said.

Other neighbors reached out to us at WUSA9. They too had video too. Of the three videos we saw, they all look similar. Men in hoodies, climbing fences to steal signs or ripping them up.

It happened Sunday morning and again Monday morning.

“Guy walked up took my sign off the holder, picked it up tore it and casually walked away,” Cindi Von Cannon said.

Cindi caught a man In the act, chased him down, and took a picture of him.

“With his back to me he said, ‘What are you gonna do about it?’” she said.

Cindi and Zach did the same thing: They got new signs and both said this attempt to intimidate won’t stop them.

“I think its pathetic that they feel the need to do that,” Zach said. “But its not gonna silence me.”

A sign that politics in Ward 6 have started to cause controversy.

We reached out to Charles Allen’s office and are awaiting a response. But a reminder that it does not appear the people stealing signs are associated with the councilman’s office.
