WASHINGTON -- A suspect has been arrested in the fatal Memorial Day weekend shooting of a D.C. mother and father who left behind five children.
Police have arrested 33-year-old Alonzo Lewis, of Southwest D.C. for the shooting deaths of Jaquon Helm and Venius Badgett. They were shot off Galveston Street in Southwest on Saturday.
Lewis has been charged with first-degree murder while armed.
On Saturday around 10 p.m., Police responded to the scene for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found a man and a woman with gunshot wounds. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was transported to a nearby hospital, where she later died.
The victims were later identified as Badgett and Helm.
Badgett was a school bus attendant in Prince George’s County, and Helm was a contractor and youth football coach.
The city increased police presence after the violent Memorial Day weekend in the District.
