With thousands of Washington Capitals hockey fans planning to flood Capital One Arena for Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final on Monday night, Comcast will pay $100,000 to keep Metrorail open late, the transit agency said Wednesday.
The system will close at 12:30 a.m., an hour later than normal.
"We are pleased to provide this extra hour of rail service so fans can support the Caps in the finals," said Ward 2 City Councilman and WMATA Board Chair Jack Evans in a news release. "Thanks to sponsors like Xfinity, we’re able to provide a ride home after the game, even if it goes into an overtime period."
Metro implemented shorter hours last June, citing a need to maximize maintenance overnight. Since, corporate sponsors have picked up the tab to keep the system open beyond the 11:30 p.m. closing on weeknights.
Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals is on Saturday and Metro is already scheduled to be open until 1 a.m.
Gallery Place-Chinatown is the closest station to Capital One Arena. The last Red Line trains are now scheduled to depart at 12:38 a.m. in the direction of Glenmont; 12:32 a.m. in the direction of Shady Grove. On the Green Line, 12:28 a.m. in the direction of Branch Avenue; 12:48 a.m. in the direction of Greenbelt. On the Yellow Line, the last train in the direction of Huntington will depart at 12:19 a.m.
