WASHINGTON — For the first time since a 41-year-old man died after a fight outside a D.C. restaurant, WUSA9 is hearing from the restaurant itself.
Police say 41-year-old Vivek Taneja, a well-known tech executive from Alexandria, died days after sustaining head injuries from a fight in the 1100 block of 15th Street, NW. According to police, the assault occurred on Feb. 2 around 2 a.m. Police are still looking for the suspect captured on surveillance camera.
WUSA9 first reported the incident started inside Akedo, an arcade/bar owned and operated by the same team that runs Shoto, a high-end Japanese restaurant. WUSA9 reported that the victim and the suspect were thrown out of the establishment.
However, managers tell WUSA9 that according to surveillance video they reviewed, the two never had any interaction inside the bar and that they left separately more than 10 minutes apart. A spokesperson for the management group sent WUSA9 this statement:
“Our hearts go out to the victim’s family during this incredibly tragic time. However, the incident in question did not occur at SHŌTŌ or ĀKĒDO/THE ARCADE, and both establishments were closed at the time of the occurrence. Our surveillance cameras show that the two men in question did not have any interaction inside of our venues. The altercation took place in the courtyard at the 1100 block of 15th Street, NW, and the victim was found roughly 300ft away from our doors and outside of our sightlines. As this is an ongoing investigation, please direct all inquiries to the Metropolitan Police Department.”
WUSA9 was not given access to the restaurant's surveillance video.
DC Police tell us the case is still under investigation.
