MPD launches new communication tool to keep crime victims updated on case progress

MPD is launching SPIDR Tech, a specialized customer service digital tool designed to provide seamless communication and transparency to crime victims.

WASHINGTON — In a groundbreaking move to enhance public engagement, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is launching SPIDR Tech, a specialized customer service digital tool designed to provide seamless communication and transparency to crime victims and reporting parties.

SPIDR Tech, short for Specialized Police Intelligence and Data Resource, is a fully automated system that ensures prompt and informative updates are delivered via text and/or email. This innovative approach aims to empower those who have filed police reports with essential information throughout the investigative process.

To benefit from this service, callers or victims need only provide an active mobile number or email address to the responding officer. SPIDR Tech will then send up to three crucial messages:

  1. The initial message will include the date, time, report classification, reporting officer’s last name, and report numbers.

  2. A second message follows for cases assigned to an MPD detective, furnishing the recipient with the detective’s name and D.C. Government email address for follow-up inquiries.

  3. A final message will be sent when an arrest has been made in the case.

MPD will integrate SPIDR Tech into its operations this month, marking a significant step forward in utilizing cutting-edge tech to enhance public safety.

“The Metropolitan Police Department is committed to bringing leading public safety technology to our communities,” said Investigative Service Bureau Assistant Chief Carlos Heraud. “SPIDR Tech will be an essential tool in assisting people in navigating police processes.”
