Investigation underway after man shot, killed in Southeast DC

​When the man was first located, he was said to be conscious and breathing.

WASHINGTON — Police are investigating a homicide after a man was shot and killed in Southeast D.C. Wednesday afternoon.

Officers with the Metropolitan Police Department responded to Naylor Road Southeast, nearby S Street Southeast, just before 4 p.m. after a report of a shooting in the area. Upon arrival, they found a man suffering from injuries.

When the man was first located, he was said to be conscious and breathing, but he has since been pronounced dead, the police department confirmed.

By Thursday afternoon, police had idnetified the man killed as 24-year-old Tyejuan Harkum of Northeast, D.C.

Police have not released any information about a person of interest in the case, but there is a lookout for a green sedan that is said to be connected to the crime.

As of Dec. 6, there has been 253 recorded homicides across the District, which is a 32% increase compared to last year within the same period of time, according to DC Police data. On Dec. 6, 2022, D.C. recorded a total of 192 homicides for the year.

The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $1,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and indictment of the person or persons responsible for a crime committed in the District of Columbia. Anyone who can identify these individuals or who has knowledge of this shooting should take no action but call police at 202-727-9099 or text your tip to the Department's text tip line to 50411.
