WASHINGTON — An overnight fire at an apartment building in Northeast D.C. has left 17 people without a home.
Acting Fire and EMS Chief Anthony Kelleher stated in a video update on X, formerly known as Twitter, that just after midnight on Monday, DC Fire and EMS were alerted to a fire on Seaton Place Northeast, nearby 3rd Street Northeast. Upon arrival, the two-story brick apartment building was found in flames — with fire on all floors and showing from the roof.
Around 12:45 a.m., fire officials said that heavy fire was showing from the roof and in the rear of the building with it extending to several adjacent homes in the building. Just before 1 a.m., they stated that all visible fire has been extinguished including all extensions.
They continued working on hot spots at that time, with no injuries reported.
The fire department says that due to the fire 17 adults and two dogs were displaced from 10 apartment units in the building. The D.C. Mayor’s Office of Community Relations and Services, Red Cross of the National Capital and Greater Chesapeake Region, and the Ward 5 Council Office are working to help the impacted residents with resources.
Some roads around the fire were closed Monday morning for the fire response.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but have since reopened.
Some families impacted by the fire have since started go-fund-me accounts, if you would like to donate and help them get back on their feet, the links will be below.
