Video shows car meetup in Northeast DC

When police arrived to the reported location no vehicles were found committing the crime.

WASHINGTON — Another car meetup, a problem that has taken over DMV streets, was caught on camera Thursday evening.

Officers with the Metropolitan Police Department responded to the intersection of South Dakota Avenue and 12th Street Northeast just before 8:45 p.m. after a report of a driving complaint in the area. Once they arrived, they did not find any vehicles causing any issues.

No report was filed, but the car meetup was caught on camera and posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, by user @bigjoo81. In the post it is said that the around 10 cars drove up and down South Dakota Avenue almost hitting other cars and doing donuts. They said the video shows the end of the meetup after around 20 minutes.

They continued by saying that they tried to report the disturbance by calling 911, but they were not able to get through for five minutes and then the cars were gone. The X user also stated that they called police because the "crowd grew and people started going after innocent drivers."

Just across the D.C. line, Maryland has been working to crackdown on these types of meetups. A bill was introduced that is expected to help crackdown on pop-up car rallies starting this summer by penalizing drivers.

The bill makes participating in car meetups a punishable offense with a fine of up to $1,000. Drivers could also face up to eight points on their driver's license and up to 60 days in jail. If someone is seriously injured, the points go up to 12 and the jail time goes up to a year.

The bill takes effect on Saturday, June 1.
