Shell casings, gun found on Northwest DC rooftop after reports of shots fired, police say

DC Police say two people have been detained Thursday.

WASHINGTON — Metropolitan Police Department officers have detained two people after they received multiple reports of shots being fired in Northwest D.C. early Thursday morning.

Officers with MPD's Third district began investigating after they received at least five witness calls and Shotspotter reports of gunfire around 3:20 a.m. Third district officers, along with officers from the Second district and U.S. Park Police are on the scene at 13th Street and Massachusetts Avenue Northwest gathering evidence and interviewing potential witnesses. There have no reports of injuries in connection to this case.

In the course of the investigation, Lt. Jon Pongratz, a watch commander with MPD's second district said police determined the shots came from a vacant building where the old Balance Gym used to be, in the 1300 block of Green Court. Pongratz said police recovered shell casings and a handgun from the rooftop. At this time, police do not believe the two men were targeting anyone, but the incident is still under investigation.

Twitter user Warren Gill shared video with WUSA9 that shows officers searching the scene, and later detaining a person.

Another Twitter user, Noah Sadlier, shared video he captured of the search for suspects in the early hours of Thursday.

Police said two people were arrested for unlawful entry, but had no additional information about what led to the shooting.
