WASHINGTON — A second person has been arrested in connection to the shooting death of 24-year-old Diamonte Lewis in Northwest D.C. last year. This comes months after police charged a 16-year-old for the same deadly shooting.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting was reported in the 900 block of U Street, Northwest shortly after 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023. When officers arrived, they found a wounded Lewis who died at the scene.

Days later, MPD released video of the accused gunman, asking for the public's help in identifying him.

In December 2023, 16-year-old  Ashton Inabinet, of Alexandria, Virginia was arrested for the deadly shooting. He was charged with second-degree murder while armed. Following his arrest, MPD alleged that Fairfax County Police went to Inabinet's home and told him he could no longer attend school while under investigation, tipping the teen off a week before MPD executed a search warrant at his home.

Months later, police announced a second arrest in Lewis' death, 20-year-old Na’eem Butler, of Herndon, Virginia. Butler was taken into custody by the MPD Fugitive Unit from the United States Marshals Service Tuesday after he was extradited from State College, Pennsylvania. He has been charged with second-degree murder while armed.

Police have not released any information regarding a possible motive or what happened in the moments leading up to the deadly shooting. However, a witness interview covered in the December 2023 court documents claimed that there was a fight leading up to the shooting.
