WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Sarah Brady, the widow of former Press Secretary James Brady, has died at the age of 73, the Brady Campaign confirmed Friday.
Sarah Brady had been battling pneumonia, according to a family spokesperson.
Sarah Brady served as the Chairperson of the Brady Campaign and Center to Prevent Gun Violence.
James Brady survived after he was shot in the head during an assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan outside the Washington Hilton Hotel on March 30, 1981. James and Sarah Brady founded the Brady Campaign in 1985 and spent decades fighting to prevent gun violence.
"Sarah courageously stepped up after Jim was shot to prevent others from enduring what our family has gone through, and her work has saved countless lives," The Brady Family said in a statement.
James Brady passed away in August of 2014 at the age of 73.
"All of us at the Brady Campaign and Center to Prevent Gun Violence are heartbroken over the passing of Sarah Brady. Together with her husband Jim 'Bear' Brady, Sarah was the heart and soul of this organization and the successful movement it has become today. In the history of our nation, there are few people, if any, who are directly responsible for saving as many lives as Sarah and Jim," the Brady Center said in a statement.
Sarah Brady is survived by her and Jim's son, and her stepdaughter.
"Sarah will be greatly missed, but her spirit lives on forever and the impact she had will live on for generations. We are grateful for the time we had with her. Sarah was our rock and there will never be another like her," the family said in a statement.
