ID=28912769WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Dozens of people commemorated the 150th anniversary of Juneteenth on Wednesday at the Tidal Basin by participating in 3000-meter and 5000-meter runs.

Tidal Basin Runs hosted the event free of charge as part of their monthly fun runs. Participants received Juneteenth certificates after their run.

Jay Jacob Wind, the president of Tidal Basin Run, said he was happy to honor the day that the last slaves in America were freed. "In recognition of a great moment in human liberation on June 19th, 1865, I am very proud to have the opportunity to put on our little-bitty fun run in commemoration," Wind said.

According to Wind, many of the participants did not know about Juneteenth. The run was an opportunity to educate the 25 people who attended like runner Elizabeth Row. "It was one of the holidays that I was not aware of today, so I am glad I came out today and became aware of it," Row said.
