WASHINGTON — Police are investigating after an officer shot a man near the Capital One Arena in Northwest, D.C. on Monday night.
The shooting happened on F Street Northwest, not far from the arena.
In a press conference shortly after the shooting, Metropolitan Police Department Executive Assistant Chief Jeffery Carroll said officers were patrolling the area when they noticed an individual who they had reason to believe was armed with a gun.
The officers got out of the car and tried to approach the man, who reportedly ran away. The officers followed. Carroll says at some point during the chase, the man displayed a weapon and an officer shot him.
The man was hit in the lower body and taken to an area hospital for help. He remains there in stable condition.
The man has since been identified as 27-year-old Corey Darnell Branch, of Southeast, D.C. He has been charged with assault on a police officer, possession of a controlled substance, and six additional firearms-related charges, including unlawful possession and carrying a pistol without a license,
As per policy, the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave.
Carroll confirmed in the press conference that while a gun was found near the man at the scene, there is no indication that the man fired the gun.
Police continue to comb through videos of the area and talk to witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at (202) 727-9099 or text the department's tip line at 50411.
This is not the first shooting reported in Northwest, D.C. Monday. Earlier in the afternoon, a man was killed near Kennedy Street and Illinois Avenue.
The shooting happened just blocks from Clyde’s Restaurant, whose owners have been vocal about crime in the area. Clyde’s Restaurant Group President John McDonnell told WUSA9 they have spent $200,000 on private security at its Gallery Place location last year. They’re on pace to spend $300,000 this year. He said none of his other locations require that.
