Here's why Oprah was visiting DC

The unveiling ceremony was held in the museum’s Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard on Wednesday morning.

WASHINGTON — Media icon Oprah Winfrey was in the nation's capital on Wednesday to attend the unveiling of her portrait at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery.

The artist of her portrait, Shawn Michael Warren, is based in Chicago where Winfrey famously hosted her daytime talk show.

The Smithsonian lauded Winfrey as a "global media leader, philanthropist, producer, actor and author."

The unveiling ceremony was held in the museum’s Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard on Wednesday morning.

In her portrait, Winfrey dons a purple gown.

The Smithsonian said the painting is the latest example of "the Portrait Gallery’s commitment to commissioning portraits of living sitters by contemporary artists."
