WASHINGTON — Parents arrived to pick up their kids at a Northwest D.C. school Tuesday morning after an unusual odor interrupted classes and forced students and teachers to evacuate to a nearby church while hazmat crews inspected the scene.
Twenty-four students and four adults were evaluated by EMS after some said they felt sick. EMS said they took one adult away from the school for further evaluation.
"School ventilated and no hazardous meter readings found," DC Fire and EMS said on Tuesday. "Source of odor, asphalt work at adjacent construction site."
The hazmat event happened near the Shaw-Howard University Metro station, several roads were reported closed after the incident.
Three roads closed as a result of the hazmat incident:
- 1800 block of 8th Street, NW
- 800 block of S Street, NW
- 800 block of T Street, NW
Parents have since picked up their children. Roads are now back open to traffic.
