2 dead, 2 hurt in drive-by shooting near Nationals Park in Southwest DC

Police are still working to figure out what happened, but have found a car they were looking for after it was set on fire and abandoned in Prince George's County.

WASHINGTON — Metropolitan Police Department officers are investigating a drive-by shooting near Nationals Park Thursday afternoon involving multiple victims. Two people were killed as they stood outsie a neighborhood market.

Officers responded to the 1300 block of Half Street Southwest in Navy Yard, outside the Friendly Food Market, for a report of a shooting just before noon. When officers arrived, they found four people had been shot: three men and one woman. Three of the victims were taken to hospitals for further treatment.

Police later confirmed the woman and one of the men died from their injuries. The victims were identifed as Patricia Harris, 35, and Tyrone Jacobs, 24, both of whom are from Southwest, D.C.

WUSA9 spoke to Harris' brother, he said Harris was a great mother of three who loved her kids more than anything.

There has been no update given on the condition of the two other men who were shot.

Police have not said whether anyone is in custody for the shooting, nor have they shared any suspect information. They did, however, believe they have found an SUV used in the shooting. Earlier in the day, police said they were on the lookout for a white Jeep Cherokee with Maryland plates. The jeep was found abandoned and set on fire in Prince George's County, late Thursday. What's left of the car could help police find the shooter(s).

Police Chief Pamela Smith said detectives are working "feverishly" with federal partners with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms to determine what led to the shooting and bring those responsible to justice.

Smith said the Cherokee was seen on surveillance video rounding a corner in the area and opening fire on the four people standing on the sidewalk. She could not say whether the shooting was targeted.

"We know there are beefs between gangs and crews in this city and we're aware of the dynamics of this neighborhood," the chief said. "But in the last 30 days, we haven't seen any violent crime in this area."

The chief also said that detectives believe the Jeep was stolen during an armed carjacking Wednesday night in Northwest, D.C.
