WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Did comedian John Oliver just make the best argument for D.C. statehood yet?

The "Last Week Tonight" host spent 17 minutes of his show outlining the long battle for Washington, D.C. to become a state.

Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, who has introduced several bills for statehood, is also a focus of the segment. Oliver talks about her limited power, calling it "pretend power," and shows a clip of the representative getting fired up a few years ago when someone tried to interrupt her speech on statehood.

Oliver finishes the powerful push for statehood with a group of children singing "an amendment" to a song about states.
