WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — D.C.-based VIDA Fitness will be leaving its flagship location inside Capital One Arena in Chinatown after 18 years to help make room for Monumental Sports and Entertainment’s $515 million renovation project.
“Monumental Sports has been a great partner for us throughout the pandemic and continues to be a great partner to this day,” VIDA owner David von Storch told WUSA9 Monday. "Our lease expired in March 2023. Monumental decided that they wanted to recapture our space and use it for fan experience programming."
An MSE spokesperson told WUSA9 that reclaiming the VIDA Fitness space "is all part of the revitalization effort of the arena to provide additional fan experiences."
The spokesperson added the planning and renovation process for Capital One Arena is anticipated to take "the next four or so years" and there were no public plans for how the VIDA Fitness space would be used. The VIDA Fitness at Capital One Arena is 25,000 square feet on three levels.
Von Storch said when informed of the decision, he asked Monumental Sports for time to find a new location for both VIDA Fitness and Bang Salon “and they graciously gave us time to do so.”
“As luck would have it, our landlord at VIDA Fitness City Vista at 425 K Street. NW, Edens, had space come available due to some tenant closures there," von Storch said. VIDA is spending about $4 million to renovate and expand its City Vista location, von Storch said, calling it an expanded "state-of-the-art VIDA Fitness facility."
The location will also include a new Bang Salon with a street-level entrance on 5th Street NW and an expanded Aura Spa which will offer services including full body Cryotherapy and Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment therapy.
Still, von Storch said the move comes with mixed emotions.
“That location was our first location and as such holds a very special place in the history of VIDA Fitness,” he said of the location, which opened in 2006. “However, the lack of office workers in that part of town since the pandemic caused our revenues to drop by almost 50 percent.”
VIDA Fitness in Chinatown will close in July, when the expanded City Vista location is expected to open.
