WASHINGTON — Two people were killed and five others were wounded in an early morning shooting in Northwest D.C. on Sunday.
DC Police responded to a call for a shooting around 3 a.m. near the intersection of 7th and P streets Northwest – near Springfield Baptist Church and the Kennedy Recreation Center. According to investigators, two men were pronounced dead on scene. Four other victims were transported to local hospitals. One victim walked into an area hospital seeking help.
The conditions of the five victims are unknown, and police are still searching for a suspect.
The motive remains under investigation. Preliminarily detectives believe one or more suspects intentionally shot at the victims.
The men who died have since been identified as Anthony Brown of D.C. and Jay Lucks of Baltimore, both 32 years old.
ANC Representative Alex Padro lives one block away on 8th Street NW and said he heard when the gunshots were fired.
"I heard what sounded like an explosion initially," he explained, "that number of shots. I immediately knew that was bad news."
He says it's not a coincidence that this deadly shooting happened just steps away from the Play DC Lounge right after it closed at 3 a.m. He also says it's not the first time a violent incident has happened at this time of night near this club.
"This is a bad fit for the neighborhood. This is a residential neighborhood for the most part. We've got some late night businesses around here but this is off the chain," he said.
Another person who lives in the neighborhood but wants to remain anonymous echoes those sentiments.
"The place needs to be shut down," he said.
Executive Assistant Chief Jeffrey Carroll gave an update about the shooting from the scene. Carroll asked any witnesses who may have seen the shooting to come forward.
No other information has been released.
