WASHINGTON — An armed man open fired on two D.C. police officers Thursday afternoon near Catholic University.
D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said that shortly before 4 p.m., two reserve police officers, fully trained police officers who work with MPD on a volunteer basis, were in their police car in the 300 block of Hawaii Avenue when a suspect open fired on the officers from a wooded area. No one was shot, and the officers called for backup, according to Newsham.
Officers from the Fourth District responded immediately and they were able to take the suspect into custody. The officers recovered one rifle, Newsham said.
"Their actions today were really heroic," Newsham said. "The actions of the officers who responded to the scene were incredibly heroic. To take this guy into custody, none of our officers had to fire a shot, and we got this guy arrested who it looks like tried to assassinate a couple of our police officers."
Around the same time, a police car was involved in a crash near Kansas Avenue and Blair Road Northwest, police said. It is not yet known if the officer was responding to the reports of shots fired, and police have not yet confirmed if there are any injuries related to the crash.
