Police: Man pretends to be interested in renting Tenleytown apartment, robs leasing office employee

The robber told the employee he was looking to rent a unit in the apartment and then stole his wallet and fled, DC police said.

WASHINGTON — A man pretended to be interested in renting a Tenleytown apartment and then robbed the leasing office employee Friday afternoon, D.C. Police said.

According to authorities, the suspect went to an apartment building at the 4100 block of Wisconsin Ave NW in Tenleytown around noon on Friday. After running into an employee in a hallway of the complex, police said the man asked about available apartments and said he was looking to rent.

Once in the leasing office, an employee went to a computer and then told the suspect that there appeared to be no available units. Police said the suspect then pretended to pull out a weapon and ordered the employee to hand over his wallet.

The suspect then fled the scene with the wallet, which contained $40 of cash.

Anyone with any additional information on the suspect or the crime is asked to call D.C. Police's Crime Solvers Unit at (202) 727-9099 or text a tip to 50411. There is a $1,000 reward for anyone who provides a tip that leads to an arrest for this crime.
