WASHINGTON — A man is facing charges after police say he purposely started a fire in his apartment after being notified that he was past due on rent.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called to the apartments in the 900 block of 5th Street, Southeast, for reports of a fire inside a unit. DC Fire and EMS responded and extinguished the flames.

Investigators say the suspect, identified as 63-year-old Mitchell Cooper, of Southeast, D.C., threatened the property manager after receiving a notice that his rent was past due. Once he returned to his unit, Cooper reportedly set several items on fire intentionally.

Cooper has been arrested and charged with arson and threats to do bodily harm.
