Man killed early Tuesday in D.C.'s Barry Farms neighborhood

The shooting was at least the third incident — and the second death — in three days in Southeast Washington

WASHINGTON — Less than 12 hours after five people were shot near Barry Farm Recreation Center in Southeast Washington, a District Heights man was killed nearby.

William Boykin, 36, of District Heights, Md., died of a gunshot wound a little after midnight Tuesday in the 2600 block of Birney Place Southeast, about a half mile from Monday's 2:30 p.m. shootings. In Monday's shootings, one of the five people, which included a child, had life-threatening wounds but none have died, Metropolitan Police Department officials said.

Both of those shootings occurred mile and a half from where Maurice Scott, 15, of Southeast D.C. died Sunday morning as he tried to enter Holiday Mart convenience store to escape another round of gunfire, police said.

On Tuesday, a second man, whose name was not released because he is a crime victim and potential witness, also was shot multiple times in the same incident in which Boykin was killed, police said. That man was taken to an area hospital, and his injuries are not life threatening.

At around 2 a.m. Tuesday, another shooting occurred about a mile and a half away in the 2300 block of Hartford Street Southeast, according to the police department's Twitter feed. Officials did not elaborate on the victims' injuries.

As of midnight Monday, 63 people had been killed so far this year in all of the district's neighborhoods, according to Metropolitan Police Department records. That's one fewer than this time last year.

Numbers for each of the city's quadrants were not readily available. Incidents of assault with a dangerous weapon, which includes shootings and stabbings, are at 616, down 9% from the same period in 2018, the records show.

A reward of up to $25,000 is available to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of anybody killed in the District. The police tip line is 202-727-9099, or you can send a text message to 50411.
