1 man dead, another injured after shooting in DC

This deadly shooting marks the 249th homicide of the year, which surpasses a 20-year record for the deadest year in the District.

WASHINGTON — One man is injured and another was killed after a shooting near the southern tip of D.C. Monday night.

Officers with the Metropolitan Police Department responded to South Capitol Street Southeast, near 1st Street Southwest, not too far away from the D.C.-Maryland state line, around 9:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found a man who was unconscious and not breathing on the sidewalk. 

Just before 10 p.m., police said the crime was classified as a double shooting after a second man was found injured. He was conscious and breathing when he was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The unconscious man, who was taken to hospital to be treated as well, died due to his injuries Tuesday morning, police confirmed to WUSA9, sparking a homicide investigation. He has been identified as 29-year-old Gary Lavon Love III, of Southwest D.C.

This deadly shooting marks the 249th homicide of the year, which makes 2023 the deadliest year in D.C. since 2002, when D.C. recorded 262 homicides. According to DC Police crime data, there has been a 35% increase in D.C. homicides, year-to-date, since last year. In 2022, at this time there were 184 recorded homicides in the nation's capital. 

The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone that provides information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for each homicide committed in the District of Columbia. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the police at 202-727-9099. Additionally, anonymous information may be submitted to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by sending a text message to 50411.
