WASHINGTON — Lyft scooters will no longer be available in the District starting next month.

The rideshare giant announced the decision to pull its two-wheeler electric scooters off the streets starting Oct. 1 as part of an effort to narrow its product portfolio, restructure costs, and streamline operations, according to a press release from Lyft earlier this month.

"This means we will no longer operate standalone dockless bikes and scooters, " the release reads. "We are discontinuing our dockless scooters in Washington, D.C."

But Washingtonians who rely on scooters to zip around the city won't be left without options. Lyft's competitor, Lime, says it is ready to fill the gap and "has invested heavily in its hardware, staff, and operations in D.C. in order to provide riders with their choice of vehicle, have it ready when they need it, and maintain tidy streets as much as possible."

Meanwhile, Lyft says it has partnered with Bird and Spin to continue providing scooter access in 25 cities where it pulled native inventory, including Harrisonburg in Virginia.
