WASHINGTON — Firefighters were called to a Northwest restaurant Thursday evening after a scooter caught fire in the basement of the restaurant's building.

According to a spokesperson with DC Fire and EMS, the fire happened shortly before 8:30 p.m. at the Surfside Restaurant on Wisconsin Avenue, just a block away from WUSA9.

Sports anchor Chick Hernandez was inside the restaurant to grab dinner when customers were told to evacuate due to the smoke.

Crews determined the cause of the smoke to be a lithium-ion battery-powered scooter that caught fire in the basement of the building.

No injuries were reported and nothing else burned in the fire.

The smoke was cleared from the building and WUSA9 can confirm Chick Hernandez ultimately ended up having Popeyes instead.
