Fallen law enforcement officers honored with vigil in DC

Nearly 300 names were added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.

WASHINGTON — The names of 282 fallen law enforcement officers were added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial on Monday. Around 10,000 people gathered at the National Mall for the special night.

Their names were read during the 36th annual candlelight vigil in front of friends, colleagues and surviving family.

Tami Marcelo flew in all the way from Nebraska to honor her husband alongside others who share the same tragedy.

“He was an investigator at the police department. He was my everything,” Marcelo said.

She said the support she saw during the event was overwhelming.

“This is unbelievable to see this support. I’m speechless I don’t have the words to describe this feeling” Marcelo said.

The sacred engraving process honors the men and women killed in the line of duty. It starts with a lengthy stencil and proofing procedure followed by a meticulous engraving and curing process. Once the engraving and curing is done, the covers are removed, and the panel is completed.

The new additions make a total of 24,067 names engraved on the memorial.
