WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — Thanksgiving Day is one of the busiest days on DC Central Kitchen’s calendar.
The kitchen once again said it distributed thousands of Thanksgiving meals to those in need, but prepping the food for future meals doesn’t stop even on a holiday. Thanksgiving morning the staff here got some help from Vice President Kamala Harris, her husband and several family members.
“There were 11 of them, and they did a lot," said DC Central Kitchen CEO Mike Curtin. "A lot of that is going to go in the total of 69,000 meals that we are distributing out in the community this Thanksgiving season.”
Curtin said Harris made a point to make this one of her first visits after the 2020 election.
“To have her come at the beginning of her time here in the White House and then bookend that with the end of her time here is incredibly special, and she made a point of saying that she wanted to be here at DC Central Kitchen with her family," said Curtin.
The vice president helped prep meals that others will enjoy early next week, while also sharing some of what will be on her Thanksgiving table.
"I made cranberry sauce already," said Harris. "I’m doing potatoes, and string beans, and brussels sprouts and a salad, just to have something fresh, and dinner rolls. I’m making dinner rolls. Lots of carbs."
A reporter then asked Harris, “What’s next?”
“Thanksgiving dinner," replied the vice president.
It was a special visit that puts a spotlight on the work DC Central Kitchen does year-round to help feed D.C. residents experiencing food insecurity.
"One in three of our neighbors might not know where their next meal is coming from and that is just unacceptable," said Curtin. "That’s why we do have to do this work every day, and that’s what I think the vice president was here to highlight today.”
