WASHINGTON — Howard University men's golf team has something to celebrate with a win that marks a first in school history.
The Bison won the Northeast Conference (NEC) Men's Golf Championship, grabbing the title Sunday afternoon at Callaway Gardens Resort in Pine Mountain, Georgia. After placing second last year, Howard led from start to finish in this year's tournament with record-setting performances.
The team's final score was 10 strokes lower than the previous record score, winning the tournament by 12 shots.
Four of the golfers on the team were named to the NEC All-Tournament Team after finishing in the Top 10 individually. Those four are Gregory Odom Jr., Bear Huff, Marcus Smith Jr., and Everett Whiten Jr.
"We truly want to thank the entire village for making this dream into a reality. Dreams come true…..Two conference titles in past three years, back to back PGA Works national championships……the Northstar is real and definitely not imagined," the team wrote in an Instagram post.
On Wednesday, Howard finds out its destination for the NCAA Regional Round, which takes place May 12-15. In the meantime, they will travel to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, to defend its PGA Works Collegiate Championship on May 6-8.
