Security concerns at Howard homecoming following HBCU shootings

Following shootings at Morgan State and Bowie, police are encouraging the public to remain vigilant.

WASHINGTON — We're heading into a big weekend in D.C. It's Howard University's homecoming weekend and security is top of mind after shootings at two Historically Black Colleges and Universities in our area.

We asked DC Police what they are doing to address safety concerns on campus and in surrounding areas.

"The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is working closely with our partners at Howard University and other local agencies to ensure safety and security surrounding the events that will occur this weekend at Howard University. MPD does not provide specifics on operations, tactics, or staffing," the police department said in a statement to WUSA9. They also encouraged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity by calling 911.

Earlier this month, two 19-year-old men were injured after a shooting on Bowie State University's campus during homecoming weekend.

Bowie State University President Aminta Breaux expressed that the shooting was not typical for the campus.

"Our campus community is very much a peaceful community. So, this is not normal for Bowie State University," said Breaux.

Classes were canceled for a week following the shooting.

Just a few days before the Bowie State shooting, police say two people opened fire during Morgan State University's homecoming weekend, wounding five people – none of whom were the intended target.

Police believe the shooters were 18-year-old Jovan Terrell Williams and the 17-year-old.
