Heavy rains flood DC condominiums

After a week's worth of rain, some residents inside a Southeast DC condominium building said water was gushing into their homes.

WASHINGTON - After a week’s worth of rain, some residents inside a Southeast D.C. condominium building said water was gushing into their homes.

Ebony Williams lives on the third floor of the condos in the 900 block of Barnaby Street Southeast. She said about a month ago, she awoke to the sound of the rain only to discover it was not an open window, but water dripping from a crack in the ceiling.

“I put a towel down and then the walls and ceiling started bubbling,” she said. “The past few days have been hell.”

WUSA9's latest weather forecast

While Williams collected the rainwater in buckets around the house, her neighbor downstairs was dealing with water gushing from his smoke alarm and vents, and resorted to punching holes in the ceiling. The resident in the first floor condo said a piece of ceiling actually fell on her in bed.

WUSA9 called the property manager, Quiza Management, who told our reporter that a pipe out back clogged, forcing water into the units. A crew fixed the problem, but admitted it’s just a temporary repair. Managers said crews are scheduled to return May 23rd to complete the work and make a more permanent fix.

Meanwhile, Williams has her doubts and fears she could be in for more problems as the forecast calls for more rain.

“I’m skeptical. I’m not sure [if I believe they will stick to their word],” she said. “Because I’ve been disappointed the first time I reported it.”

The board of directors did not return our calls to find out why it took a month of complaints before they addressed the problem.
