WASHINGTON — Some of the dogs that lived in the home of an hours-long standoff that left three Metropolitan Police officers shot in February are up for adoption.
On Saturday, 14 of the more than 30 dogs who were rescued from the home can be adopted, the Humane Rescue Alliance announced. The event will take place between noon and 7 p.m. at the adoption center at 71 Oglethorpe St. in Northwest.
The other dogs that were found in the home have already been placed, and others are still in training and behavioral support, according to the Humane Rescue Alliance.
Eleven of the dogs found in the home on Hanna Place in Southeast were puppies, as young as 2 months old, and 20 were adult dogs.
Dogs rescued from DC barricade up for adoption
On Feb. 14, police officers attempted to serve an arrest warrant for animal cruelty, assisting the Humane Rescue Alliance. When officers tried to contact Stephen Claude Rattigan, also known as Julius James, he reportedly refused to come out and fired at officers through the door, police told WUSA9 in February.
Rattigan barricaded himself inside the home and continued to fire shots over a period of several hours, the chief said. That evening, he surrendered to police.
Rattigan has been charged with assault with intent to kill while armed, assault on a police officer while armed, and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in D.C. He is also being charged with misdemeanor cruelty to animals.
