WASHINGTON — Zoo staff said giant pandas Bao Li and Qing Bao are loving their new home in D.C.
“It’s amazing, a whirlwind. We’ve been preparing for it a long time." Laurie Thompson, The Assistant Curator of the Giant Pandas, said.
WUSA9 cameras were allowed inside the National Zoo to learn more about DC's new residents. Thompson said one is very social. The other a bit more shy.
"Qing Bao seems to be reserved than Boa Li. Bao Li has taken over like he’s lived here forever.” Thompson, said.
Over the next few days, staff and pandas will spend as much time together as possible, getting used to the new faces, sounds and surroundings.
"They have to trust us, recognize our voices and come when we call them.” Thompson, said.
The pandas will also undergo a quarantine period of 30 days. Their health will be closely monitored
And, then the fun part. Training and enjoying their newly renovated play area with new pools, beds and climbing structures,
“They are eager to work. They love to interact with staff. Bao Li is more vocal when working with people. Qing Bao is more reserved. She works on her own and decides when she works but when she does very engaged and active,” Dr. James Steeil, said.
Dr James Steeil the Veterinary Medical Officer. He said the pandas are quickly adjusting.
"They’re eating! They ate overnight. They are settling in very well. They’re learning about us and we are learning them. Overall a tryout period these next few days but they’re doing great." Dr. Steeil, said.
The pandas will make their debut on Jan. 24, 2025
The panda cam will be available starting January 24th. People can watch live from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
