Clearing of 4 DC homeless encampments postponed due to weather

The clean-up and biohazard removal is expected to begin Wednesday morning at 20th/21st Streets and E Street/Virginia Ave NW.

WASHINGTON — D.C. officials are planning to start cleaning out multiple encampments occupied by those experiencing homelessness, according to a press release. Three of the locations are in Northwest, D.C. and a fourth is in Southeast, D.C.

Crews were set to begin clearing the encampments between May 15 and May 20 but were postponed to May 16 due to inclement weather.

The notification came from the DC Office of the Deputy for Health and Human Services (DMHHS) Monday, explaining how the decision to clear encampments is made.

The cross-agency effort begins with a report, and then a formal encampment assessment. If a location is classified as an encampment, the District enacts its "encampment protocol." A 14-day written notice is required, and officials say the department's outreach teams will increase their engagement with those living in the encampment to provide resources for those being displaced.

" After an encampment protocol engagement takes place, outreach teams continue to monitor the area and ensure residents are connected to services," a press release from the DMHHS said.
