DC red light citations drop to lowest point in 7 years

Red light camera citations decline in the District.

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Postal workers delivered the lowest number of red light camera citations in the last seven years to the mail boxes of registered vehicle owners.

The Metropolitan Police Department sent 71,739 red-light camera citations by first class mail during Fiscal Year 2014, its lowest point since FY 2008 when the post office delivered 65, 250 notices.

Some critics still see the decrease in red light camera tickets and revenue as bad news because of the District's harsh ticket issuance method, which still issued 2,135,861 citations and gleaned $141,305,156 in revenue a year ago.

Speed camera tickets and revenue also plunged last year to their lowest level since FY12 as the city issued 282,021 such citations, and the fact that the number of parking tickets issued last year (1,684,863 citations) was the lowest since FY10.

"Motorists racked-up 96,223 red-light camera tickets at intersections in Washington, D.C. during FY12, which represents the banner year of the city's automated red light enforcement program, " said John B. Townsend II, AAA Mid-Atlantic's Manager of Public and Government Affairs. "In contrast, drivers incurred 24,884 fewer citations two years later in FY14, a relative decrease of 25.4 percent over this time span."
