WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Bobby Bennett, a D.C. radio legend better known as "The Mighty Burner", has passed away.

Sources close to his family say that while the cause of death is not official, it's believed that Bennett died from complications from a stroke that he suffered several weeks ago.

Bennett's nickname came from his days at D.C. Soul music AM station WOL. He worked there from the late 60's up until 1980. After that, Bennett worked as a sports announcer on WTOP and later as program director at WHUR.

Bennett also hosted an R&B show on WPFW and perhaps most famously is credited with creating the "Soul Street" channel on Sirius XM, where served as program director for that channel.

Beyond his radio accomplishments, Bennett also co-authored a book about Motown and R&B.

He is survived by his wife Connie, his son Eric, his daughter Amy and his grandchildren.

Tentative plans call for funeral services to be held in the D.C. area late next week.
