'Beat the Heat' | DC pools to open on Juneteenth amid sweltering temperatures

Here's which pools and recreation centers will be open Wednesday, June 19.

WASHINGTON — With temperatures rising and Juneteenth commemorations  around the corner, D.C.'s decision to open its outdoor pools this year takes on added significance. 

DC pools are typically open on weekends only until June 23. But on the federal holiday, these pools are expected to host record numbers of visitors seeking both relief from the summer heat and a place to honor the historic significance of Juneteenth. 

The following outdoor pools will be open on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.:

  • Banneker Pool, 2500 Georgia Avenue NW
  • Francis Pool, 2435 N Street NW
  • Hearst Pool, 3701 37th Street NW
  • Upshur Pool, 4300 Arkansas Avenue NW
  • Langdon Pool, 2860 Mills Avenue NE
  • Randall Pool, 25 I Street SW
  • Rosedale Pool, 1701 Gales Street NE
  • Ridge Road Pool, 830 Ridge Road SE
  • Oxon Run Pool, 501 Mississippi Avenue SE

While recreation centers are usually closed on holidays,  the following recreation centers will be open from 11:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. 

  • Columbia Heights Community Center, 1480 Girard Street NW
  • Stead Recreation Center, 1625 P Street NW
  • Palisades Community Center, 5200 Sherier Place NW
  • Riggs-LaSalle Recreation Center, 501 Riggs Road NE
  • Raymond Recreation Center, 3725 10th Street NW
  • North Michigan Park Recreation Center, 333 Emerson Street NE
  • Trinidad Recreation Center, 1310 Childress Street NE
  • Benning Stoddert Community Center, 100 Stoddert Place SE
  • Deanwood Recreation Center, 1350 49th Street NE
  • Bald Eagle Recreation Center, 100 Joliet Street SW
  • Fort Stanton Recreation Center, 1812 Erie Street SE

Besides pools opening, spray parks across the city will remain open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

During the Extended Heat Emergency, D.C. residents are reminded to stay cool and to check on their vulnerable neighbors. Anyone looking to request accessible transportation to a cooling center can call the shelter hotline at 202-399-7093 or dial 311.
